Film synopsis: All of us attach emotional significance to our things. Why, for some of us, does collecting go awry? In search of an answer, the filmmakers venture into the crowded apartments of compulsive hoarders and hear their stories. With fascinating archival footage from a 1947 newsreel, they look to the famous case of the Collyer brothers in New York, and visit with neuroscientists who explain the emerging science behind our attachment to our possessions. Stuffed introduces three very different people who are struggling to de-clutter, examining the issue in terms of relationships, attachment to objects, isolation, childhood experiences, and consumerism, as well as the hard-wiring of the brain. The film also looks at various coping mechanisms and de-cluttering strategies, always with a sense of humor and empathy. However unusual the predicament of hoarding may seem, it is an essentially human one -- to cope with fear, loss, and uncertainty in an increasingly chaotic and cluttered world.
