(Part 1) Legal and mental health professionals involved with litigating families may face conflicting ethical obligations and fundamentally different approaches to perceiving and addressing the problems of children and families. Traditional models of legal and psychological practice may not completely fit the complex needs of high conflict families. Judicial officers seek the information necessary to reach appropriate decisions for children and families, while establishing treatment/intervention orders that will allow effective assistance to the family. Within each profession, practice models have been developed that attempt to adapt to the demands of the family law context, sparking controversies both within each professional group and when ethical conflicts arise between the professions. In this two-part program, an interdisciplinary panel will explore the conflicting paradigms and ethical demands that arise when therapy occurs in the context of the Court. Part I will feature the contrasting perspectives of psychologists, parents counsel, minors counsel and a judicial officer on issues such as criteria for effective treatment, appropriate use of treatment information, structuring effective therapy orders, and the role of treatment information in the Courts decisions for children and families. Part II, (Workshop 5) will focus on the analysis of complex case scenarios and the management of ethical conflicts between professionals when treatment interacts with the Court.
