Intro-Elder Abuse & Neglect CD

This presentation will focus on the basics of elder abuse and neglect: the statistics, the known causes, typical profiles of abusers and victims, the types and indicators of elder abuse and neglect, and the specifics of mandatory reporting. Many of the initial interventions in elder abuse were based on child abuse and neglect models primarily because of the similarities drawn between children and elders who had cognitive difficulties. In recent years, there has been an emphasis on the similarities between woman battering and elder abuse. The "graying of America" which points to the elderly as the fastest growing segment in our society (especially those over 85 years of age), emphasizes the need to focus on this societal problem. Continuing education in elder abuse is required for mental health professionals.
