People who hoard are often tolerated, even dismissed as "eccentric." All of us know of and possibly care for a person whose hoarding puts themselves, their homes, and others at risk. "Hoarders" have recently come into public awareness in alarming numbers. A wide spectrum of professionals is responding with new research, therapies, public health/housing codes, and comprehensive approaches. Professional organizers in the front lines' are likely to have clients whose hoarding makes organizing frustrating or impossible. However, the magnitude and complexity of the work needed to be done can seem beyond the scope of an organizer's responsibilities, and appear to be more than they want or should handle alone. But, with additional skills and knowledge, professional organizers can definitely help "hoarders."

In this practical session, participants will receive and be guided through materials, including summary of current research, review of ethical issues, updated assessment tools, plus many "How-To's" for working with clients who hoard, based on BERGFELD's 20 years of experience.
