Do you remember how it felt when you first glimpsed the vastness of our ethical obligations as professional organizers? It can be intimidating to realize just how vulnerable our clients often are and how much trust and hope they put in us. These realizations can leave us longing for more detailed ethical guidance. We might even feel reluctant to work with challenging clients for fear of inadvertently causing harm or discomfort to them or ourselves. In this session, we glean relevant knowledge from the codes of ethics of a variety of helping professions, such as counseling, psychology, and social work. These codes offer guidance more specific than our NAPO Code of Ethics and can help us to set healthy, safe parameters and anticipate "sticky situations" before we are immersed in them. We are not mental health professionals and should not attempt to be, but there is much we can learn from their ethical practicesincluding how NOT to inadvertently slip into giving amateur therapy! With a clear understanding of our ethical duties and challenges, we can give the full measure of our services to clients without accidentally crossing boundaries. Debbie Stanley, president of Red Letter Day Professional Organizers, is a chronic disorganization coach, author of several books, a popular speaker and instructor, and developer of NAPO's "PO-102: Fundamental Organizing Principles." She has a B.A. in journalism and an M.A. in industrial/organizational psychology, and is currently pursuing a second master's degree in mental health counseling. Debbie is chair of NAPO's Publications Committee, president of NAPO-Southeast Michigan, and an active member of the National Study Group on Chronic Disorganization (NSGCD), from which she has earned the Chronic Disorganization Specialist and ADD Specialist certificates.
