Co-parenting counseling is used as one type of referral designed to support parents in the articulation and development of their new relationship as co-parents. In order to move the parties from their past relationship to this new type of relationship, the therapist needs to have an awareness of each party's individual personality and psychological needs, the overall family dynamics, including the psychological functioning of the children, the emerging abilities and current strategies of the parents, as well as an awareness of the behaviors and needs of the children. Additionally, the practitioner must have a clear understanding of the role of the Court in the process. This workshop will present a discussion of the theoretical and clinical approaches used in this counseling process, as well as the implications for ancillary interventions and referrals by the courts and evaluators.
