Assisting Clients with Learning Disabilities in Adulthood MP3 Instant Download

This session will focus on how we, as professional organizers and coaches, can work effectively with high-functioning adults who have learning disabilities. If the statistic is accurate and approximately 10% of the US population has some form of learning disability, this impacts a large number of employers, employees, friends and families.

Far beyond the school years, persistent problems related to learning disabilities continue to challenge individuals, not only affecting their facility with reading, writing and arithmetic but also posing difficulties with time management, family and household management, spatial relations, directionality, physical coordination, and social skills.

The main goal for this presentation is to identify how we fit into the picture for these clients. In our roles as organizers and coaches, we are invited to be part of someone's journey and the development of their success. We must come to the situation ready to learn and teach, listen and suggest, and support without fostering dependence upon ourselves. The content of this presentation is aimed at helping each attendee to develop an understanding of learning disabilities, increase awareness of the unique needs adults with learning disabilities may have, and explore strategies to address learning disabilities and differences.

Lynne Johnson is a Certified Professional Organizer (tm) in Chronic Disorganization and President of the National Study Group on Chronic Disorganization. She is an organizer-coach whose mission is to help people put their lives in working order. When she discovered that traditional organizing techniques did not work for many of her clients she pursued training as a personal coach specializing in AD/HD with Optimal Functioning Institute and continues to learn from the teleclasses and conference programming provided by NSGCD and NAPO. Lynne formerly served on the board of NAPO-New England.
