Alternative Conceptions Who is the Parent? CD

This presentation will address the parent-child issues in families that have been formed with the help of gamete donorship or surrogacy. We will look at the tensions between the rights of the parents and the best interests of the child that may confront us as we try to mediate disputes in families that include parents and a "someone else" who participated in creating the child or that include a matrix of parents who creatively join their gametes and/or wombs to have a child. In the context of this new fertile world of assisted reproductive technology, we will go back and explore the most basic questions: Who is a parent? We will ask this question from the perspective of the parent, the child, the outside party who collaborated in the conception, the mental health profession, and the legal system.
